Could not use the clone stamp because the area has not been defined. (Alt-click to define a source point). I do that and the same error message comes out...so how can I clone on there please help!

hold the alt button down when you click of the pattern you want to set as your stamp. then release the alt button and you're all set
If you got a sticky keyboard try the other alt button (the alternate alternate button hehe)

yeah like the previous answerers:
make sure you're on an active layer and that it's not empty, you can't clone nothing.
Make sure you don't have a mask selected. (press ctrl-D) to deselect.
