Photoshop Help Please !!!!?

Hi, I'm pretty good at using Photoshop CS3 but there is just one thing I cannot work out how to do! Here is a link to an image of what i'm trying to create:

I think they have used photoshop but Am i right? How on earth have they managed to crop out that football player so neat that it is kind of built into the background and everything fades very nicely, how on earth do i do it on photoshop and have they used photoshop or something else? Thanks :)

This is done in photoshop. The player was selected out of one photograph, placed over another, duplicated and moved, faded and gradient masked. then he was duplicated again and a motion blue was applied, this was then gently erased to keep the blur only where they wanted it. He was then desaturated, colored and had a sharpen filter applied to him. His shirt was then carefully reselected and deeply saturated and slightly lightened.

the background was created by rendering clouds, inverting, rendering difference clouds, and stretching that till it looked about right.

the person on the top left was simply selected with a round marquee tool, the selection was feathered then copied and pasted into the image, faded and colorized.

the gritiness, the scratches and so on where created by adding a bit of noise then mexxotinting them with long strokes, rotating, and repeated with different strokes and amount of noise. Then all the left over was gently erased leaving the grit you see.
