If you attend an accredited school:

You can purchase educational versions for about half the price. Educational versions can be purchased at many places, but the most popular online store is academicsuperstore.com. Educational versions are identical to retail versions except for some slight packaging differences (and sometimes the startup screen says Academic version). However, educational versions are NOT upgradable and not licensed commercial use.

Method 2:

Purchase a copy of Photoshop 5, 6, 7, CS, or CS2 (make sure that it's legal). Then, purchase the Photoshop CS3 upgrades. You can find used or new copies of older versions of Photoshop on eBay or your local craigslist.
